US Secretary of State Marco Rubio vigorously defended Donald Trump’s political course at the Munich Security Conference. At the same time, he contradicted fears that the USA could turn away further from Europe. “We take our future and yours seriously,” he said, speaking of a fate that is intertwined. Rubio said: “We want Europe to be strong.”
At the start of his speech, he acknowledged the history of the transatlantic alliance since the post-war period. But mistakes were made. He spoke of a transfer of state sovereignty to international organizations while opponents arm themselves. He criticized restrictions imposed by climate policy while competitors used fossil fuels.
He also mentioned the consequences of uncontrolled migration. The USA has now corrected these errors. “We made these mistakes together,” Rubio said. The USA is ready to correct these mistakes on its own, but would prefer to do this with the Europeans. He said: “We are part of a civilization, Western civilization.” (hkl/sda/dpa)
