Yeoh, who was born in Malaysia, will be celebrated in Berlin this week. At the opening of this year’s Berlinale, the actress is to be awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for her life’s work.
Historic Oscar win
Yeoh made Oscar history in 2023 when she became the first Asian woman ever to be named Best Actress. She earned the trophy with her performance as a combative laundromat owner in the action comedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
In the 80s she filmed action films in Hong Kong. In 1997 she caused a sensation as a Bond girl (“Tomorrow Never Dies”), followed by her appearance as a swordsman in “Tiger & Dragon” (2000). Taiwan-born Ang Lee (71, “Brokeback Mountain”) directed the Oscar-winning martial art epic “Tiger & Dragon”. He is invited as a guest speaker at the star ceremony together with his colleague Jon M. Chu (46). Chu brought Yeoh in front of the camera for the comedy hit “Crazy Rich” and the musical films “Wicked” and “Wicked: Part 2”. (sda/dpa)
