Four people died and others were injured in several avalanches in northern Italy. An avalanche initially broke out in the Alpine region of Valtellina and hit three ski tourers, two of whom were killed. In Trentino, the Italian mountain rescue service reported two avalanches, each with one death. There was also an incident in the Aosta Valley on the border with Switzerland and France.
The incidents occurred on a day with a very high avalanche danger. The warning level was three on the five-part European scale for avalanche danger.
In the first incident in Trentino, four people were initially missing. After a large-scale search and rescue operation by the mountain rescue service, all four were found, but one of the two injured later died of his injuries in hospital. In the Aosta Valley, an avalanche hit two ski tourers from a group of five people. However, they were adequately equipped and were able to free themselves from the snow. (sda/dpa)
