Iran appeared slightly optimistic after a first round of negotiations in the conflict with the USA.
“It was a good start,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told state television after the indirect negotiations mediated by host Oman. “We are in the process of reducing mistrust,” added the minister in the Omani capital Muscat.

When asked by the moderator whether and when the discussions would continue, Araghtschi did not respond. According to him, both government delegations will initially return to their capitals for consultations. Foreign Office spokesman Ismail Baghai wrote on Platform X that the decision on further rounds of negotiations would be made “in coordination with the respective capitals”.
From Iran’s perspective, the talks were about the controversial nuclear program and a possible easing of sanctions. The USA, on the other hand, is insisting that Iran’s missile program and support for Iran’s allies such as Hamas, the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen must also be issues.
The conversations are considered sensitive. The USA has massively increased its military presence in the Gulf region – also to protect its own bases and allies from possible attacks from Iran. US President Donald Trump has already threatened a harsher military strike than the attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities in June 2025. (hkl/sda/dpa)
