The German carnival float builder (yes, that’s a job) Jacques Tilly is in trouble with the Russian justice system. He was accused of using his work to spread false reports about the Russian army. The process begins today. Tilly is also accused of acting out of hatred and selfish motives. The artist himself reports this in one worth reading interview in the world.

Tilly herself doesn’t understand the accusation: “I can’t make sense of it. Such a charge lacks any proportionality. It’s downright absurd,” he tells Die Welt, but also explains that his feelings are divided: “On the one hand, it is of course threatening when you are targeted by Russia as an enemy of the state. You never know what will come of it. On the other hand, I think: It’s a great confirmation of my work. Satire probably hurts after all. The fact that what we do is not just carnival entertainment, but even resonates with Putin – that motivates me.”
