US President Donald Trump is losing patience with his Justice Minister Pam Bondi. This is reported by the newspaper “Wall Street Journal”, citing sources in the White House. Trump’s displeasure with Bondi, who is also the country’s chief prosecutor in the US legal system, does not come as a complete surprise.
In September, Trump had already made a long post on his Truth Social platform. “They are all guilty as hell,” the president fumed, “but nothing is being done.”
The Wall Street Journal already suspected that Trump had accidentally sent a private message to Bondi via Truth Social.
Now the newspaper immediately reported on a series of misconduct that he blamed on Bondi:
- Epstein files: There is a persistent theory among parts of Trump’s supporters that the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein did not voluntarily end his life in prison in 2019. Rather, Epstein was eliminated because he had incriminating material about powerful people in politics and business. During the election campaign, Trump promised to clarify the matter and to open the files on the case. As soon as he took office, he postponed the effort. The files only became public after pressure. Trump’s name also came up. In addition, blacked out areas in the documents could be made readable again using a small software trick. Bondi “screwed it up,” admitted Trump’s chief of staff Susi Wiles in a highly publicized interview with the magazine “Vanity Fair”.
- Hesitant investigations: “What about Comey, Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff and Leticia???,” Trump complained in his post on Truth Social in the fall. His displeasure referred to former FBI Director James Comey, Democratic US Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James. They had all threatened Trump with legal consequences, for example because of his role in the storming of the Capitol in 2021. “We can no longer hesitate, it destroys our reputation and our credibility,” said Trump in the direction of Bondi. He wanted more decisive action against his opponents.
Only at the weekend did Jerome Powell, head of the US Federal Reserve, make it public that the US judiciary was investigating him. Officially due to cost increases for renovations to central bank buildings. But Trump and Powell have been engaged in a public dispute for months because the central banker refuses to lower key interest rates in response to political pressure. The Fed chief is convinced that the Justice Department’s investigation against him is politically motivated and that Trump is very much involved.
The White House rejects any influence in the case. But the investigations against Powell have an unexpected effect: even Republicans in the US Parliament are defending the Fed chief.
