US tariffs of 25 percent should apply to all countries that do business with Iran.

President Donald Trump announced this on the online platform Truth Social. In the short article with three sentences, it was initially not clear what exactly the phrase “doing business with Iran” meant. The most important trading partners of the Islamic Republic, which is subject to extensive sanctions by the USA and the EU, include: India, China and Turkey.

It is not the first time that the US President has resorted to such “indirect” tariffs. During the Ukraine war, Trump had already imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on goods from India in connection with the country’s purchases of Russian oil. Additional tariffs against China could meanwhile escalate the trade conflict between Beijing and Washington after relative calm.
Nationwide protests
Iranians have been demonstrating against the Islamic Republic’s authoritarian system of rule for more than two weeks. The protests triggered by an economic crisis have now taken on a nationwide dimension. There were violent riots and serious unrest in cities. The security apparatus reacts with brutal severity. According to activists, hundreds of demonstrators have already been killed. These are the most serious protests in Iran in years.
