Elba, who is known from the TV series “Luther” and “The Wire” among others, can now call himself “Sir”. However, the 53-year-old is being honored for his commitment away from the film set. Elba has long campaigned to end knife violence in English cities and founded a foundation to support young people.
Comedian Matt Lucas (“Little Britain”) will also be honored at the turn of the year with induction into the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Lucas has both British and German nationality. Partly because of Brexit, he decided a few years ago to become a citizen, to which he is entitled because his Jewish grandmother was expelled from Germany.
Writer Richard Osman (“The Thursday Murder Club”) was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and was enthusiastic. He told the British news agency PA: “This is the best thing that has ever happened to me (…).” German-born composer Max Richter was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
British honors such as knighthoods and medals are presented by members of the royal family, but are awarded by the government. (sda/dpa)
