The Ukrainian Air Force said the plane crashed while intercepting enemy flying objects. “According to preliminary information, there was an emergency situation on board and the pilot had to escape using the ejection seat,” the statement said. The pilot is therefore fine and there was no damage or casualties on the ground.

After a long campaign with Western partners, Ukraine received its first F-16 fighter jets in 2024. The aircraft are primarily used to defend against Russian drone and missile attacks. Several machines have already crashed during the risky maneuvers, the first shortly after deliveries began. The loss of every single F-16 is difficult for Kiev, as it cannot produce them itself and not all of the 80 or so promised aircraft have yet arrived in Ukraine. (sda/dpa)
