After the attack on the sidelines of Berlin’s Christopher Street Day (CSD), hundreds of people remembered the victims at the Brandenburg Gate. “Yesterday was an attack on all of us, on all of our identities, on our livelihoods, on our community and our democracy. And we won’t let it get us down,” said one of the speeches on a stage.
People laid flowers, lit candles and hugged each other, others held up rainbow flags and posters and banners that said things like “Hate is deadly,” “An attack on one is an attack on us all,” or “We will dance again.” A banner with the inscription “Protect queer lives” hung on the stage on Pariser Platz. A helicopter circled over the area. The police continue to search for the suspect.
A minute’s silence was also held in front of the Brandenburg Gate. The area was partly secured by barriers, and many people also took part in the commemoration behind them. (sda/dpa)
