The ongoing forest fires in Spain near Madrid are affecting around 88,000 people. According to the latest estimates from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the fires in Madrid and Avila reached a combined area of about 45,000 hectares.
Animals also had to be rescued from the affected areas. Members of the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME) rescued livestock affected by a forest fire in Robledo de Chavela on Saturday, July 25, and then provided first aid to the animals.
The Civil Guard rescued a dog while evacuating residents from houses on Friday July 24th.
The extinguishing work continued during the night and intensified during daylight.
According to the European Commission, the EU sent four firefighting planes to Spain and three to France, where serious fires are also raging. (emm, reuters)
