Irish police are believed to have prevented an attack near the border with Northern Ireland. A bomb was found in a car during an intelligence-led operation last Wednesday, Police Chief Justin Kelly said midday.
The driver and later a man were arrested and questioned. Kelly spoke of a “significant” find. The car was stopped as part of an investigation by a special unit against militant republican splinter groups.
Irish Republicans in Northern Ireland want to unite with the Republic of Ireland to form a united Ireland – in contrast to unionists who support Northern Ireland remaining in the United Kingdom. Thousands of people died in the resulting Northern Ireland conflict, which lasted about three decades and was largely resolved in 1998.
Kelly told RTÉ that it was worrying that there remained a small group of dissident republicans who had not stopped using their weapons and explosives. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan described the incident as “very worrying”. (dab/sda/dpa)
