After a series of serious accidents, Greece is getting serious: Parliament approved a new law on e-scooters with the aim of ending the chaos on streets and sidewalks. There is a risk of high fines for violations.
Under 17? E-scooters are taboo
The most important innovation: young people under the age of 17 are no longer allowed to use e-scooters on the road. Anyone caught doing this has to pay 150 euros (139 francs). If a rental company rents a scooter to people under 17, the provider even has to pay 1,000 euros.

It will also be significantly more expensive for adults. In the future, e-scooters will be banned on roads with a speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour or more. Anyone who goes there anyway risks a fine of 350 euros.
The obligation to have liability insurance is also new. Without insurance, the trip costs a fine of 250 euros. Drivers must be able to show proof of insurance along with identification at any time.
Parked incorrectly? Scooter is being towed away
In the future, there will be no quarter for carelessly parked scooters. If they block sidewalks or zebra crossings, they can be removed; There is a risk of fines of between 40 and 80 euros.
Anyone who drives without a helmet, looks at their cell phone or wears headphones while driving can also face fines of between 40 and 150 euros.
More and more injured people in clinics
The Greek government is reacting to the sharp increase in the number of accidents involving vehicles by tightening regulations. Hospital doctors have recently reported an increasing number of e-scooter riders, some of them seriously injured – especially young people, but also holidaymakers.
The government argues that young people are not trained for road traffic, for example through a car driving license, and that drivers generally underestimate the scooters, which travel so quickly and dangerously “like in a video game”. (leo/sda/dpa)
