Mexican authorities discovered 10 bodies in Zacatecas state on Saturday. The state experienced high levels of violence between 2021 and 2022 due to fights between criminal groups over drug trafficking routes.
The bodies were found in Morelos, Pánuco and San Alto, the secretary general of the Zacatecas government, Rodrigo Reyes, said on social networks, without specifying the causes of death or possible suspects.
The Secretary General of the Government of Zacatecas said that this discovery “requires an immediate and decisive response” and an increase in police presence.
Mexico, plagued by the drug trade, has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Criminal groups – the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel and the Sinaloa cartel – are fighting over the lucrative and strategically important drug trafficking routes. (sda/afp)
