Ten people were killed in a plane crash on the Bahamas’ national day on the Atlantic island nation. What was supposed to be a day of celebration had become a “day of mourning,” said Prime Minister Philip Davis after police confirmed the death of the pilot and at least nine other people on board. The nationality of the victims is not yet known.
The accident occurred in the northern part of Andros, the largest archipelago in the Bahamas. The Cessna 402 of the local airline Flamingo Air was traveling from the international airport in the capital Nassau towards San Andros Airport when the accident occurred, said the aviation accident investigation authority AAIA. “The aircraft reportedly ran into difficulties and crashed into bushes before landing,” the AAIA said in a statement.
The airline said it was working with the relevant authorities to clarify the circumstances of the accident. According to the Aviation Ministry, there was a fire incident on another aircraft from the same airline on the same day. According to media reports, the airline responsible was temporarily suspended from flight operations.
