Due to heavy ash emissions from the Etna volcano on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sicily, air traffic at Catania Airport is currently only possible to a limited extent. According to the airport operating company SAC, the airspace in the area of the ash cloud moving south was severely restricted until 7 p.m. This applies to both departures and landings.
Travelers are asked to check the status of their flight with their respective airline before traveling to the airport. The airport operator announced further information later in the day.
Canceled, delayed and rerouted flights
According to the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), ash emissions from an opening on Mount Etna began early in the morning. The activity intensified and formed an eruption cloud that rose around 1.5 kilometers above the summit. According to current weather forecasts, the ash will be carried further south in the coming hours, the INGV said.
As can be seen on the Catania airport website, several flights have been canceled, including a connection to Berlin. Other planes were able to start late, while others had to be diverted to Palarmo. For individual connections, we initially waited for the airline to decide how to proceed. (sda/dpa)
