A ballroom, a giant triumphal arch and now a magnificent golf course: US President Donald Trump wants to change the look of the US capital with another project. Work will begin on September 1st on a new golf course in the middle of the city on a peninsula, Trump announced on his Truth Social platform. It will be “one of the best golf courses” in the world and will be open to the public. Critics of Trump’s architectural projects, which are piling up in his second term in office, speak of a desire for recognition. Trump, however, says a new golf course will bring prestige to the city.

The 80-year-old enjoys playing golf himself. The Trump family business operates golf clubs in several countries. The US President often spends his weekends playing golf, especially in Florida. How important the golf project is to Trump can also be seen from the fact that he was driven to the location on Sunday and viewed the plans on site.
Trump wants to enable the golf course to host major professional tournaments such as the US Open, Ryder Cup and PGA Championship. In his post, Trump did not provide any information about the cost of the work under the direction of the US Department of the Interior, nor about who would pay in the end.
Old golf course is to be replaced
The golf course in the US capital is intended to replace the existing public golf course site East Potomac Golf Links on the peninsula, which Trump believes has run down. He wrote that many of the trees were damaged and posed a danger to visitors. He also sees major deficiencies in irrigation. It is a prestige location. The golf course, surrounded by the Potomac River, offers views of the city’s famous monuments. The White House is also only a few kilometers away.
It has long been known that Trump has targeted the old golf course. The place, which came into operation in the 1920s, is noisy “New York Times” vulnerable to flooding. The maintenance budget was limited, which left its mark. In 2020, a non-profit organization took over the operation and wanted to restore the site.
Not every project goes smoothly
The golf course is another example of how Trump wants to leave his mark on the democratically governed capital. He has a huge ballroom built on the White House grounds. He is also planning a giant triumphal arch in the city. Recently, in a controversial project, he had the huge Reflecting Pool in the vicinity of famous monuments lined with blue paint so that the water reflects the monuments even better. However, shortly after completion, the water turned green again due to algae, so workers had to come in. (sda/dpa)
