In Nice, southern France, a young mother was shot dead by unknown assailants while behind the wheel of her car. She was traveling with her baby.

The baby was unharmed, said Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi, who spoke of a “heinous act” and “barbarism”. The young woman was shot at in the evening from one or two motor scooters and an investigation into murder had been initiated, the newspaper “Le Parisien” reported, citing the public prosecutor’s office.

An eyewitness told the newspaper “Nice-Matin” that the woman threw herself protectively over her baby, who was sitting in a child seat, and was shot in the back and side. With the lifeless woman behind the wheel, the car rolled down the sloping road and crashed into a post. Witnesses provided first aid and freed the baby from the car. According to the broadcaster TF1, it was a six-month-old girl. There is still no trace of the perpetrators, only the two scooters were discovered near the train station.
The motive for the crime was initially unclear. As the broadcaster France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur reported with reference to the police, the officers were investigating a possible femicide. (sda/dpa)
