Mohammadi had made critical comments during the recent mass protests and the repressive state crackdown. Most recently, she reported on the demonstrators or prisoners killed in the uprisings and also wrote about them on social media. Her employer, the newspaper “Hammihan”, had to cease operations a few weeks ago due to critical reports.
The journalist became internationally known in 2022 after she was one of the first journalists to report on the death of the Iranian Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini and was subsequently imprisoned. Together with her colleague Nilufar Hamedi from the newspaper “Shargh”, she was tried on espionage charges, convicted and finally pardoned in February 2025. According to reports, she spent a total of around 17 months in detention. (sda/dpa)
