The US Navy’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has entered Souda Bay on Crete. According to information from military circles, the stay at the large naval and air force base there serves to supply the ship.
Growing tensions in the nuclear dispute
The arrival comes amid growing tensions in the dispute between the US and Iran over its nuclear and missile programs. Washington has recently significantly increased its military presence in the region, including with the aircraft carrier “USS Abraham Lincoln.” There are also other warships, air defense systems and fighter aircraft in the region.
Israeli media also reported that US military tankers and transport planes were spotted at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv.
US President Donald Trump once again threatened Tehran with a military attack if negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program failed. From Crete, the aircraft carrier can reach the Middle East within a day.
Netanyahu repeats sharp warning to Tehran
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated strong warnings to Tehran against an attack on Israel during a speech in parliament in Jerusalem. In this case, the Jewish state would “react with such force that you cannot even imagine,” said the head of government. “We are going through very challenging and complex days, the people know that,” he also said. «Nobody knows what the next day will bring. We are vigilant and prepared for any scenario. These days it’s important to close ranks.” (sda/dpa)
