Shortly before the parliamentary elections in Hungary, Donald Trump intervened again in the election campaign. The US President has promised the EU country economic support if Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wins again in the 2026 Hungarian election.
Trump said on Friday on his online platform Truth Social that he was ready to use “the full economic power” of the USA to help Hungary. The US would look forward to “investing in the future prosperity that will arise from Orbán’s continued leadership.”
Not Trump’s first intervention
Trump is thus continuing his highly unusual campaign support for Orbán. Orbán has ruled Hungary uninterruptedly since 2010, when he came to power in Budapest for the second time. The right-wing nationalist politician is US President Trump’s closest ally in the EU – and also of his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
It was on Tuesday US Vice President JD Vance traveled to Budapestto support Orbán in the election campaign, as did US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in February. On Thursday evening, Trump directly called on the citizens of Hungary to to vote “for Viktor Orbán”.: “He is a true friend, fighter and winner and has my complete and total support for re-election as Prime Minister of Hungary.”
Orbán is threatened with defeat
However, Orbán is threatened with defeat in the parliamentary elections on Sunday. His Fidesz party is also in the last polls before the 2026 Hungarian election clearly behind the Tisza party of opposition politician Peter Magyar. Shortly before the election, the opinion research institute Médian, among others, published one another survey before the Hungarian election that underlines this trend.
The survey shows that challenger Magyar’s party can even hope for a two-thirds majority in the parliamentary elections in Hungary.
