US President Donald Trump has once again increased tensions between the US and Cuba. At a congress in Miami, Florida, he said: “Cuba is next.” What exactly he meant by that remained unclear. Just before that he had spoken about military successes in Venezuela.
He had recently hinted at a possible “takeover” of the neighboring socialist state. He said in the White House that he believed he would “have the honor” to “take over” or “liberate” Cuba in some form. He didn’t get any more specific.
Relations between Havana and Washington have been strained since the socialist revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959. Under Trump, the US government exerted increased pressure – especially after the US attack in Venezuela, where authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro was arrested in the capital Caracas in January and flown to New York. This meant that one of Cuba’s most important supporters left. Venezuela mainly supplied Cuba with oil. Cuba is in serious economic trouble.
