US President Donald Trump has signaled support for a new package of sanctions against Russia over the ongoing war in Ukraine. “I support it,” he said in an interview with US broadcaster Foxnews.

But he went on to say: “I hope we don’t have to use it.” “Major sanctions have already been imposed against Russia” and the Russian economy is “very bad,” said Trump. However, Russia is larger than Ukraine and a more influential country.
In recent months, Trump has imposed several measures against the Russian economy because of the war in Ukraine, which has been going on for almost four years, including punitive measures against the two largest Russian oil companies and punitive tariffs against India because of its trade relations with Russia.
Approval possible next week
According to Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham, Trump could use the sanctions package to increase pressure on countries such as China, India and Brazil to stop buying Russian oil. He expects approval from Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress next week. (dab/sda/dpa)
