Amid tensions between Cuba and the United States, US President Donald Trump is bringing a “peaceful takeover” of Cuba into play. Havana is currently negotiating with Washington, Trump said in Washington, but added: “There could well be a peaceful takeover of Cuba.” It was not clear from the Republican’s brief answer whether Trump was referring to a possible annexation by the USA or whether other countries would also be involved. He also didn’t give a time frame.
Trump emphasized that Cuba was “in big trouble.” “Cuba is, to say the least, a failing state.” Trump was confident that the USA could achieve “something very positive” for the population of the island nation in the Caribbean.
Washington has been putting considerable pressure on Cuba’s communist government for weeks. The country has not received oil from Venezuela since December as Trump ordered a complete blockade of sanctioned oil tankers carrying supplies from the sister South American nation. Trump then threatened tariffs against Cuba’s oil suppliers. Certain sanctions are now to be relaxed. Diplomatic relations are further strained by an exchange of fire between Cuban border guards and the crew of a US-registered speedboat, in which four people died. (sda/dpa)
