A US federal judge in Boston has ruled that deporting migrants to third countries without sufficient warning is unconstitutional. That’s what she reports Washington Post. The government must give those affected more time to take legal action against their deportation.
Specifically, Judge Brian Murphy declared unconstitutional a directive from the immigration agency ICE that allowed deportations to other countries with only six hours’ notice. The government had relied on unclear assurances from the destination countries that the deportees were not in danger – which the court rated as inadequate.
The ruling complicates the actions of the Trump administration, which had thousands of migrants brought to third countries last year in order to speed up deportations.
Murphy gave the government a 15-day deadline for a possible appeal. (hkl)
