In view of the geopolitical tensions surrounding Greenland, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has acquired a tried and tested object:

“I bought a globe for 15,000 crowns to know exactly where Greenland is,” he told journalists. That’s a good 570 francs. The 71-year-old received a lot of malice for this on social media. “He doesn’t even have basic knowledge from school,” criticized one Internet user.

Babis later provided a kind of explanatory video. “Some people laugh at me because they have a different brain than me,” he said self-deprecatingly. But on a standard world map, Greenland looks bigger than it is. Only on the globe can you see the actual area ratio between Greenland and the USA or Europe. You can also see “beautifully” how close Russia is to Greenland and how Russian missiles could fly over the North Pole to North America.
Hoping for agreement among allies
The self-declared fan of US President Donald Trump did not take a clear position on the US threat against Greenland. On the one hand, he emphasized that Greenland “of course” belongs to the Danish kingdom. On the other hand, he called on Denmark and the USA to negotiate a diplomatic solution.
“I hope that it ends well and that the allies come to an agreement,” said Babis. The billionaire and founder of the right-wing populist party ANO has been head of the Czech government for the third time since December. Like the USA and Denmark, the Czech Republic is a member of NATO. (sda/dpa)
