A violent storm front over the central Mediterranean is causing massive disruption in the Aegean Sea and Crete. The Greek authorities have warned the population of many regions, including Athens, via text message: “Stay at home if possible.”
Heavy rain is expected in the next few hours and until midnight on Wednesday, comparable to the rainfall of three months of winter, forecasters warn.
Schools remain closed
Schools at all levels remain closed in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands such as Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes and Kos. The lessons take place online, Greek radio reported.

Ferry traffic suspended – strong winds
Numerous ferry connections have been suspended because the strong winds endanger shipping. Wind speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour were measured in the southern Aegean. Waves more than six meters high were seen in the southeast Aegean, local media reported. According to meteorologists, the storm is expected to last until late Thursday evening. (hkl/sda/dpa)
