Storms and Sahara dust on Crete: “We feel sorry for the islanders”

There is a weather alarm in the Aegean: heavy rain, hurricane force winds and Saharan dust are affecting parts of Greece. watson readers report on site.

Storms in Greece caused extensive damage and killed at least one person. The southern Aegean and the region around Athens were particularly affected.

The Swiss couple Elsbeth and Urs Hunziker have been on the Greek island of Crete since last weekend. They report to Watson: “The weather here is like winter at the moment. Storms like this haven’t happened here on Crete for 20 years.”

Strong southerly winds brought Saharan dust to Crete and the Cyclades islands of Santorini, Naxos and Mykonos. The dust turned the sky deep red in places and significantly limited visibility.

“We feel so sorry for the islanders,” says Elsbeth Hunziker. “For Easter they cleaned everything up, decorated it and were ready to pamper the tourists.” But then the storm and the Sahara dust came. «And everything is covered in powder and the cleaning work starts all over again…»
