On average, traffic jams in the region at this time of day are only around 250 kilometers long. As the evening progressed, the length of the traffic jam decreased again.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, there was a stricter speed limit for drivers in the region: according to an order from the Paris police prefecture, they were not allowed to drive a maximum of 80 kilometers per hour. Snowfall and ice also had the northwest of France – Normandy and Brittany – firmly in their grip. There were also traffic disruptions there.
Bus services in Paris disrupted
In Paris, bus services have also been temporarily interrupted, as the RATP transport company announced. There were also disruptions on the regional railway lines.
The weather conditions also had an impact on air traffic, as the number of flights at Charles des Gaulle and Orly airports had to be reduced by 15 percent into the evening, as French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot announced. The reason for this is that the runways need to be cleared and the aircraft need to be de-iced.
The snow cover in the French capital not only caused trouble, but also pleasure: at the famous Sacré-Coeur Basilica, which is located on Montmartre Hill, passers-by marveled at a skier who used the slope for a descent including a jump. (sda/dpa)
