Jagland’s lawyer confirmed this to the newspaper “Verdens Gang”. Accordingly, officials from the Office for Combating Economic Crime also searched Jagland’s house on the Norwegian east coast.
After his time as Prime Minister, Jagland was Secretary General of the Council of Europe and Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee for years. On Wednesday, at Norway’s request, the Council of Europe lifted Jagland’s immunity as Secretary General of the human rights organization from 2009 to 2019.
Jagland is being investigated for serious corruption due to his contacts with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. During his time at the Council of Europe, he is said to have stayed in Epstein’s apartments in Paris and New York and vacationed at his property in Palm Beach.
Jagland’s lawyer told the NTB news agency that his client is cooperating with the responsible investigative authority, but does not believe that there are circumstances that would lead to criminal prosecution. (hkl/sda/dpa)
