The caps, an ironic allusion to Trump’s well-known “Make America Great Again” hats, have recently appeared increasingly at demonstrations, including in Copenhagen and Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The caps also feature the Danish lettering “Nu det Nuuk”, a pun on the name of the city of Nuuk, which essentially means “That’s enough”.
The caps were designed last summer by Copenhagen vintage dealer Jesper Tonnesen. He said he had become increasingly frustrated by the tone of international politics and current geopolitical developments. He wanted to make a small, symbolic statement with the design.

At first the caps only sold sporadically. That suddenly changed last week after pictures of the hats were shared on social media. Tonnesen’s stock was sold out within a few hours and demand significantly exceeded his production capabilities.
The success can also be explained by the humorous approach, said Tonnesen. The cap makes it possible to express criticism without appearing aggressive. Humor lowers inhibitions and invites conversation. “You can laugh and still send a clear message,” he said.

US President Donald Trump recently reaffirmed his plans regarding Greenland and also linked the dispute to his failure to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. While top European politicians are currently meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, symbolic resistance is growing in Denmark and Greenland – now also in the form of red caps.
