Polish extreme athlete dies on bicycle tour in Siberia – cause unclear
It was a daring plan: bike 900 kilometers through the coldest part of Siberia in winter. The Polish extreme athlete Adam Borejko didn’t make it.
He was found dead in his hotel halfway in the town of Chandyga, as the Russian civil protection agency in the East Siberian Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) announced. Information about the cause of death was not given.
According to his blog on Instagram, Borejko took off from the capital Yakutsk on January 25th. It’s currently around 35 degrees frost there. The Pole’s destination was the village of Oymyakon, which is considered one of the coldest permanently inhabited places on earth. In 1933, 67.8 degrees of frost were measured there. In the first days of February this year it was minus 39 degrees at night in Oymyakon.
The merciless cold in eastern Siberia always attracts adventurers. In January 2022, a marathon with international participation was held in Oymyakon. (dab/sda/dpa)
