“The Guthrie family – that includes all siblings and their spouses – have been ruled out as possible suspects in the case,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said on Platform X. “To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel.” The senior is the mother of the presenter Savannah Guthrie, known from the US breakfast television (NBC show “Today”).
According to the US broadcaster CNN, Nanos’ statements referred to speculation by self-appointed online detectives or individual media outlets about the extent to which relatives could play a role in the disappearance of the 84-year-old, who has been missing for a good two weeks. Nanos made it clear that the family members were themselves victims of the incident – “it’s that simple.”
According to an investigative expert at the station, this acquittal of the family indicates any suspicion of possible progress in the investigation, as for this to happen there would first have to be enough information about the crime itself.
The daughter has repeatedly appealed urgently in video messages to the alleged kidnapper(s) to release the pensioner, who has a heart condition and is dependent on medication. The case caused a national stir in the USA. Investigators in the state of Arizona believe it was a kidnapping and are looking for a male suspect captured on a video camera at Guthrie’s home. (sda/dpa)
