The defense ministry in Tokyo announced that the missile apparently fell outside the Japanese exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan. According to the South Korean General Staff in Seoul, North Korea fired at least one projectile in an easterly direction. North Korea’s new missile test came during an ongoing military exercise between South Korea and its ally the United States.
USA and South Korea hold military exercises
North Korea has long condemned Washington and Seoul’s joint military exercises as a dress rehearsal for an invasion. The two allies, however, explain that their maneuver is purely defensive in nature. According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the powerful sister of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un, Kim Yo Jong, condemned the ongoing military exercises and warned of “unimaginably terrible consequences.”
According to several UN Security Council resolutions, North Korea is fundamentally prohibited from firing ballistic missiles. The country last tested two ballistic missiles over the Sea of Japan on January 27th.
