A 15-year-old girl and her mother died of suspected food poisoning after a poisoned Christmas dinner in Italy. The family had previously presented themselves to the emergency room twice but were sent home, as reported by the Italian news agency Ansa.

The girl died during the night and the mother died on Sunday morning in Campobasso in the Molise region. A spokeswoman for the local police confirmed the incident and said that an investigation is currently underway.
The exact cause of death has not yet been clarified beyond doubt. An autopsy has already been ordered, the results of which remain awaited. A whole series of things need to be clarified, said the police spokeswoman.
The cause is suspected to be a fish dish that the family had eaten at Christmas dinner. The father also became seriously ill and is still in the hospital. According to the Ansa news agency, he could possibly be moved to Rome.
The case has caused deep concern in the region. Antonio Tommasone, mayor of the town of Pietracatella, where the family lived, said: “It is a tragedy that leaves us speechless.”
