Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has commented on the rumor that she could be considered for the office of Federal President next year. “That’s absurd,” a spokeswoman from Merkel’s office replied “Tagesspiegel”.
Previously had “Picture” reports that there is concern among the CDU leadership that the CDU Greens could propose Angela Merkel as Federal President. “Because Merkel is still very popular with Green voters, the Greens – for example, Baden-Württemberg’s top candidate Cem Özdemir (60) – could propose Merkel as a candidate for the highest state office,” the report said. However, according to “Tagesspiegel” information, the former Chancellor has no intention of becoming the successor to the incumbent German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
The Federal Assembly will decide on Steinmeier’s successor at the beginning of 2027. The Union is likely to be the largest faction. There are always loud calls for the first female head of state.
