Melania Trump became the first first lady in the history of the Security Council to chair a meeting of the United Nations’ most powerful body. “Sustained peace will be achieved when knowledge and understanding are fully valued in all societies,” said the 55-year-old at the meeting in New York, which focused on children, technology and education in conflict situations worldwide. “I ask you to build a generation of future leaders who support peace through education.”

Trump thanked other Security Council member countries for welcoming them. “Your mission to maintain security while maintaining a commitment to preventing conflict, both in times of war and peace, is important, must be carried out consistently and should never be taken lightly.”
In March, the USA took over the rotating monthly presidency of the UN Security Council, whose tasks also include chairing the meetings. UN ambassadors or government representatives usually lead the meetings of the 15-member body. (sda/dpa)
