European leaders are scrambling to respond to the mounting transatlantic crisis after US President Donald Trump’s bombshell tariff threats over Greenland.

Trump on Saturday announced that he was prepared to impose additional 10% tariffs on all goods from eight European countries – Denmark, France, Germany, the UK, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands – starting on 1 February, with the rate rising to 25% by June.

In response, EU Council President António Costa called an emergency summit on Thursday to ready a European response that could include activating the bloc’s most powerful tool, the ‘trade bazooka’.

Danish, Greenlandic and European leaders have repeatedly said that the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland’s right of self-determination should be respected.
