The Azadi Tower is one of the most famous buildings in Iran. The approximately 50 meter high tower was built in 1971 to celebrate the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. It was designed by the Iranian architect Hossein Amanat. The building was originally called the “Shahyad Tower”, but it was only after the Islamic Revolution of 1979 that it was renamed “Azadi” – “Freedom” in German.
The large square around the tower is one of Tehran’s most important public spaces. It regularly serves as a venue for state celebrations, political demonstrations and large rallies. The tower is also close to an airport in the west of the city with over a million inhabitants.
It is currently unclear whether the Azadi Tower itself was damaged in the explosions. Official information about the cause and possible victims is not yet available. (mke)
