Authorities have urged residents not to leave their homes after a massive explosion at an oil refinery on the Texas coast. Windows and doors should also remain closed.

The explosion occurred Monday evening at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur. According to authorities, there were no injuries. According to initial findings, the cause is an industrial heater, as a police officer told the US broadcaster Fox News. After the explosion, a large, black cloud of smoke rose, local broadcaster KFDM reported.
According to the company, around 435,000 barrels of crude oil are processed into diesel, gasoline and kerosene every day in the refinery. (hkl/sda/dpa)
