After being fired as Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem thanked US President Donald Trump. The Republican will now take over the post of special envoy for a new security initiative for the Western Hemisphere, as Trump previously announced.

“Thank you very much, President Trump,” Noem was quoted as saying in a statement from the ministry. “We have achieved historic successes at the Department of Homeland Security to make America safe again.” This also includes the most secure border in the history of the United States, Noem continued.
Noem is the first female minister in the current US administration to leave office. She was in trouble, among other things, because of the rigorous operations of the immigration agency ICE, her public portrayal and a multi-million dollar advertising campaign. Oklahoma State Senator Markwayne Mullin will lead the department from the end of March. (sda/dpa)
