The warehouse was a distribution center for Kimberly-Clark, one of the world’s leading hygiene products manufacturers. The company stored toilet paper, Kleenex brand tissues and diapers on approximately 110,000 square meters (that’s about 15 football fields) in Ontario.
According to authorities, the building had an operational fire suppression system, but it was damaged when parts of the roof collapsed. Several trucks docked at the distribution center were also destroyed in the fire. The fire department managed to confine the flames to the warehouse and protect the neighboring buildings. There were no injuries.
Arson suspected
During the extinguishing work, suspicions arose relatively quickly that it could have been arson. According to the fire department, there were several fires at different locations in the distribution center at the same time.
Ontario police have now arrested a man on suspicion of arson. The man worked at the distribution center and worked for NFI Industries, a third-party distributor for Kimberly-Clark.
He is said to have uploaded videos on social media that show him setting fire to piles of paper in the warehouse. These are said to have put the investigators on his trail. Nothing is yet known about a possible motive. (lzo)
