The Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office has opened a criminal investigation following the death of a newborn who consumed Nestlé infant formula. The authority announced this on Thursday, two days after the start of health police investigations.
According to prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul, after discharge from the maternity hospital, between January 5 and 7, 2026, the child had been fed with an artificial infant formula of the Guigoz brand, which had been recalled due to possible contamination with the bacterium Bacillus cereus, Bordeaux prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul told AFP.
Callback at the beginning of January
Gaudeul ordered analyzes to determine whether the bacterium was present in the milk consumed. The affected batch of milk powder was recalled from retail by Nestlé at the beginning of January as a precautionary measure after Bacillus cereus was detected in individual samples.
In a statement on Thursday, the French ministries of agriculture and health said there was an “extensive, still dynamic” health warning. At the same time, the authorities assured “continuous monitoring” of the incident.
On Wednesday, the French company Lactalis also announced an extensive recall of infant formula in several countries. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this recall, like Nestlé, is related to a supply of raw materials from a single manufacturer in China. (sda/awp/afp)
