Instead of sun and beach, many holidaymakers in Bali are currently experiencing dramatic floods: torrential rain has flooded parts of the Indonesian island and triggered evacuations.
Particularly in the south around the popular holiday resorts of Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Sanur and Canggu, hotels, guesthouses and villas were sometimes waist-deep in water after persistent tropical rain.
Dozens of holidaymakers were also evacuated
The Bali Sun newspaper reported that the island was experiencing one of the heaviest rainy seasons in years. Emergency services had to use inflatable boats to bring numerous residents and dozens of travelers to safety. According to local media, residents sometimes used surfboards and kayaks to save themselves and their pets from the floods.
Authorities also reported several landslides and fallen trees. Sirens wailed along the Badung River at night, warning of rising water levels. For some vacationers, this means relocated accommodations and changed travel plans. Some guests were moved to other hotels, others ended their stay prematurely. There are also warnings about significant traffic disruptions on the way to Ngurah Rai Airport – travelers should allow significantly more time.
Heavy rain possibly until April
The heavy rain began over the weekend and increased at the beginning of the week. The local weather authority warns of further heavy showers – possibly into April. Actually, the months from December to February are the rainiest, after which the monsoon rainfall usually slowly fades away. But this year the rainy season hit Bali unusually early and particularly hard.
3/Three days of non-stop rain caused the Badung River to overflow, inundating densely populated residential areas and tourist areas in Badung, Jembrana, and Gianyar.
In several coastal areas of Bali, the weather warning level raised to the highest level.

The “Island of the Gods” is one of the most popular travel destinations in Southeast Asia: surfing beaches, rice terraces, Hindu temples, yoga retreats and comparatively low prices delight visitors from all over the world. According to the provincial administration, around 7.1 million international guests traveled to Bali in 2025 – with a population of just over four million. (sda/dpa)
