Against the backdrop of US claims on Greenland, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen has called on his compatriots to remain calm.

According to Danish radio, Nielsen said he understands that some Greenlanders are worried about recent statements by US President Donald Trump regarding the situation in Venezuela, at a press conference in the Greenland capital Nuuk.
“But Venezuela and Greenland are not comparable.”
Trump recently emphasized again to journalists: “We need Greenland with a view to national security.” Greenland is an autonomous region in the Arctic that belongs to Denmark.
Greenland’s head of government is fed up with communication via the media
Nielsen now called for a direct line to Washington. He is tired of communication with the USA taking place via the media.
Greenland and the USA have always worked well together in the past. An annexation of Greenland overnight will not happen. “We are open to dialogue,” said Nielsen.

“But the international rules and laws are based on peace, cooperation and agreements made.”
“These times call for solidarity,” Nielsen continued, according to broadcaster DR. “We have to show that we stand together as a society, but we also have to demonstrate unity among the allied countries.” (sda/dpa)
