In South Sudan, gunmen killed 73 people in a gold mine, according to government reports. The violence near the town of Jebel Iraq in Central Equatoria state broke out on Saturday because of a dispute over gold mining, said Vice President James Wani Igga. At least 25 other people were injured in the “hideous massacre” and others fled. “While the search for the missing continues, we fear that the number of victims could rise,” said Igga.
“Such senseless violence against innocent civilians is unacceptable and must be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

It remained unclear which group was behind the attack. The vice president promised to launch an official investigation and improve security at mining sites and trading centers. The governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, Charles Madut, also condemned the act. “Such senseless violence against innocent civilians is unacceptable and must be punished to the fullest extent of the law,” Madut said.
