An officer in the Greek armed forces has been arrested for suspected espionage. As the Greek General Staff announced, there is clear evidence of criminal offenses under the Military Penal Code. Accordingly, the accused is said to have collected secret information of military importance and passed it on to third parties. According to the General Staff, national interests could have been endangered as a result.
Access to NATO information
According to information from military circles, it is a commander of a unit with access to sensitive NATO information from the Air Force. According to unconfirmed reports from the Greek media, the officer is said to have transmitted the data to a major power that is considered the USA’s most important strategic rival.
Investigations for months
The Greek news service EYP is also involved in the investigation, Greek radio reported, citing government circles. Accordingly, both the Ministry of Defense and the secret service had received initial information about the officer’s alleged actions months ago. The arrest was accelerated after the volume and sensitivity of the information transmitted had recently increased.
Attempting to recruit additional people
In addition, according to media reports, the accused is said to have tried to recruit other people to pass on confidential information. During searches, the investigators seized technical devices and special software that were said to have been used to transmit the data. The authorities are therefore not ruling out further arrests.
