A senior manager at US bank Goldman Sachs is resigning following the revelation of ties to notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Chief lawyer Kathryn Ruemmler will leave the credit institution on June 30, as Goldman Sachs confirmed to the Financial Times, the New York Times and the financial service Bloomberg, among others. Ruemmler was previously a prosecutor, lawyer and general counsel in President Barack Obama’s White House.

The recent publication of large amounts of Epstein documents made it clear that Ruemmler’s connections to him were significantly closer than previously known. E-mails revealed, among other things, that she received expensive gifts from him and advised him on media issues. At that time, Ruemmler was working as a lawyer. The 54-year-old has been general counsel at Goldman Sachs since 2021.
Epstein died in his New York prison cell after his arrest in 2019. The Wall Street Journal recently discovered an indication in the documents that Ruemmler was one of the people Epstein called immediately after his arrest. According to the newspaper, this emerges from handwritten notes from FBI employees that were published as part of the documents package.
Ruemmler’s spokeswoman said in response to the report that she only had a professional relationship with Epstein and knew nothing about his crimes. Goldman Sachs initially denied that Ruemmler could lose her job because of this. (dab/sda/dpa)
