France said it was the first EU country to open a consulate general in Greenland. The new Consul General Jean-Noël Poirier should, among other things, strengthen political connections with local decision-makers, according to the Foreign Ministry in Paris. Germany is only represented in Greenland by a volunteer honorary consul.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced the creation of the consulate general in Nuuk last June. Back then, US President Donald Trump had repeatedly spoken about wanting to take control of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark.
The conflict over the island in the Arctic recently came to a head when Trump repeatedly threatened to annex the Arctic island. Denmark and the USA are trying to find a solution in talks. (sda/dpa)
