Denmark’s King Frederik X expressed his condolences to the Greenlanders in the conflict with the USA. “Our thoughts are very often with the people of Greenland in these weeks,” said the monarch on the sidelines of a state visit to Lithuania. “We follow what’s happening closely and also talk about it with our children who ask us about it.”

“Greenland’s well-being is very important to us”
In recent weeks, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to annex the Arctic island, which belongs to the Danish kingdom. “We see that the Greenlandic people are very worried,” King Frederik continued. This affects him and his wife, Queen Mary. “Greenland’s well-being is very important to us.”
The king said he was aware of how great the support of “close allies” had been for Greenland and the Danish kingdom. Germany and other EU countries sided with Greenland and Denmark in the conflict with the USA. Last week, Trump surprisingly withdrew his threats to use military force if necessary to bring Greenland under his control. Denmark and the USA are trying to find a solution in talks.
King Frederik X is planning to visit Greenland in February
In order to see for himself the situation of the Greenlanders, King Frederik X wants to visit the island from February 18th to 20th. He was last in Greenland in April 2025. “We want to listen to people’s thoughts and concerns and find out how the situation is affecting their everyday lives,” said Queen Mary. The situation concerns her very much.
The king’s upcoming visit is already well received in the Greenland capital Nuuk. “It comforts us and gives us security that he is coming,” Greenlander Esther Jensen told Danish television. (hkl/sda/dpa)
